Mike & Lori's Wedding

PALE RIDER

From across the dusty western plain, a lone shadowy figure, the last bachelor gunslinger, appeared against the intense desert sun. His trusty steed had carried him to his destination, a tiny prairie town named Matrimony. It was there that he had an appointment with destiny. This cowboy had come to lay claim to the hand of his best gal and together they would ride off into the sunset and live happily ever after (cue Clint Eastwood spaghetti western theme song and film credits). And that’s a wrap.

Thus begins the legend of Mike and Lori’s wedding ceremony as recorded by this lowly scribe. And well, it sort of happened that way. For anyone who actually knows Mike, he obviously didn’t ride into town. As usual, his steed was towed into town. But his yellow Pantera looked fantastic!!! And so did Lori’s red Pantera. Both Panteras were on display at the hotel entrance, styled in bride and groom fashion complete with bow tie, wedding veil, and trains of aluminum cans. The venue was the luxurious Wild Horse Pass Casino in Chandler Arizona.

The ceremony was attended by some 220 guests and was officiated by Charlie McCall, Mike’s longtime friend and partner in many adventurous road trips. As Charlie explained to the assembled family, friends, and guests, some time ago Mike had requested that Charlie legally preside over the wedding ceremony. Only one problem; Charlie wasn’t a minister. Oh, the wonders of the Internet. After a brief search, Charlie discovered that he could legally apply online to become a minister licensed in 47 states. This process, as he described, was so complex, complicated, and overwhelming that Charlie decided to go ahead and have his border collie ordained as well. Sort of a belt-and-suspenders approach so that if Charlie was sidelined for whatever reason, his dog could step in.

John Taphorn gave a touching tribute entitled “How Does a Nerd Get a Trophy Wife?” Now it could be argued that the term “Trophy Wife” borders on politically incorrect feminine objectification. But anyone that knows Lori is acutely aware that she is infinitely more than mere physical beauty and stunning shoes. She is an angel in De Tomaso coveralls. And Mike is…Mike.

Garry and Sue Choate, happily married for 47 years, delivered a sage message highlighting “Tips for a Long and Successful Marriage”. FYI for you guys out there, consider contacting Garry directly and get the list…seriously. There was also a vague metaphor tossed in vowing for “the husband to always hold her socket and the wife to always hold his wrench”. Go ahead and make up your own joke. And what Pantera themed event would be complete without the telling of Drewsaster Tales. Always a crowd pleaser. Solid gold comedy.

And now for the serious stuff. United States Air Force Reserve Lt Col Mike Drew, formally attired in his Air Force Mess Dress, and Lori Albino, adorned in an elegant white wedding gown, came together at the alter before God and a whole bunch of Pantera folks from around the world. Mike was accompanied by his Best Man, Geoff Peters, who had come over from his home in London to take part in the festivities. And Lori was attended by her three grown children and her two grandchildren (Yep. He’s now Grandpappy Mike. Kinda has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?). Mike’s lovely mother was there beaming as proudly as I have ever seen. Also attending were the familiar faces of Steve and Merry Dalcino.

Vows and rings were exchanged followed by thunderous cheers and clapping. Possibly, the only event more applauded than this was the first moon landing.

After the ceremony the hotel staff quickly and efficiently transformed the room into a stylish banquet room and the revelry began. There was a hors d’oeuvres table, two pasta stations, a carving station, and an open bar. And although Mike and Lori had requested “No Gifts” there was a table for very personal offerings including an oil painting of Mike’s and Lori’s Panteras side-by-side, and a bound photo brochure from the Canadian Pantera Group. Fittingly, there were testimonials to the years of Mike’s selfless dedication to the Pantera community that has resulted in a worldwide network of friends. Amen to that.

All of this was followed by the ceremonious cake-cutting, Mike and Lori’s first dance as husband and wife, party games, dancing, and the consumption of mass quantities of alcohol late into the evening, including a special, blue-colored drink concocted especially for the occasion, called “Pantera Love Potion”. The entire event was, in fact, absolutely perfect in every detail. I mentioned this to Mike and told him that I found it nearly impossible to believe that he had anything to do with it. I mean, considering the Drewsaster curse and all.

The following morning Mike and Lori hosted a scrumptious breakfast in a much more relaxed setting for those of us who wouldn’t be attending the rest of the POCA Fun Rally, and we all had a chance to bestow our best wishes to the new Mr. and Mrs. Mike Drew. Yes, “Mr. and Mrs. Mike Drew”. Those are words that had never before been spoken in the modern era. Go figure. Maybe dinosaurs will roam the earth again.

And finally, for all of you gentle readers that are being reached by this message wherever you may be, please join the rest of us in raising a glass to “All the Very Best for Mike & Lori”.

Meeting Notes

Lamar Fairchild ran the May meeting, in the absence of President George.

We had 13 people present this month. Those attending were; Emilia & Jim Seiferling, Mike & Nancy Haney, Paul Bowden, Garry & Sue Choate, Mike Drew, Rick Carlile, Ron Southern, Ken Montgomery, and Lamar Fairchild & Mila.

Driving for Dollars:

Lamar brought his Rousch Mustang, Ken in his DeLorean, and Rick in his Pantera.

Rick won the drawing for $10.00.

 

Raffle:

The raffle had 3 prizes available. John McNamee donated 2 hats, with Capitol Panteras embroidered on them, and Sue Choate brought a bag of coffee beans, with a photo logo of their Pantera on it. Ryan Choate roasted the coffee. Mike Haney and Paul Bowden won the two hats and Ken won the bag of coffee beans.

Lamar went over the yearly activity schedule. If members were involved with any of the events, comments were made. Rick will be racing his TVR at the historic races, at Sears Point this weekend. Ken will be the DJ at the all-British car show in Dixon this Sunday the 19th. He also gave a presentation on his tour of the Tesla Motors plant, in the bay area.

 

Mike gave a report on his and Lori's marriage at the POCA Rally in Phoenix. They had 180 RSVP's with 220 showing up! Everything went perfect.

Ron Southern reported that both his and Mike Ronald's Pantera's were shown in the opening shots of Dennis Gages "My Classic Car", episode about the Napa auto show. Mike won the "best foreign accent" award at the Napa show. Way to go Mike! Ron also showed off his Pantera belt buckle that was written up in the last Profiles edition. The final item he had was a 1:20 scale Mangusta molded in a soft Lexan, on a slot car chassis. This has to be a very rare model, as nobody has every seen something like that before.

Mike and Nancy Haney just purchased a 2012 VW Jetta, turbo diesel. It was a trade in at their local VW dealer with almost no miles on it. Mike said it's getting 50 MPG and actually has some oomph in it! Not your usual diesel.

Mike Drew and Garry Choate just bought a 1 owner barn find 1972 Pantera, #3903. They found it in storage on Watt Ave, in Sacramento. It only had 50,000 miles and has been parked since 1978! They will restore it and then sell it. Mike bought the exhaust system and coilovers that were from #1575, which Jim sold to Randy Welch. Randy didn't have any need for them and gave them, plus the wheels and tires, back to Jim. The wheels are 15" Etole's, 10" & 12", with tires (225 front / 295 rear). CAPITOL PANTERAS VISIT ANOTHER CALIFORNIA WINE REGION

Late October weather in the Sierra foothills can be unpredictable, and at times extreme. However, Saturday, October 22nd, turned out to be a perfect day for an excursion through the foothills and California’s other wine country… the Shenandoah Valley of Amador County. Though many people are familiar with the Napa Valley wine Region, the beautiful foothills wine region of Amador County’s Shenandoah is home to over 30 wineries, and produces many fine wines. On a recent morning, five Pantera owners and their passengers assembled at a Folsom Starbucks under cloudless skies with temperatures in the mid-seventies, for a tour of the Motherlode, and wine tasting. Those present included: Gary and Sue Choate; Jim and Emilia Seiferling; Don and Kathy Gagnon; Gary Glenn and Michele Boehn; and Henry Kirk.

Leaving the suburban traffic of Folsom we enjoyed a scenic drive along the back roads of the Mother lode on the way to a stop to rest and explore the site of John Marshall’s 1848 discovery of gold, at Sutter’s Mill. The State of California has established a State Park at Coloma and faithfully re-created the Mill at its original site on the south fork of the American River. The park also contains a museum, and many of the old buildings have been preserved. This being an off-season day, there were a relatively small number of tourists, but the sight of five beautiful and exotic cars prompted a number of them to approach and engage in conversation with our group, and even more people stopped to take photos.

Departing the park, we traveled higher into the foothills through Placerville, enduring its seemingly unending traffic controls and congestion. Happily, a number of other drivers deferred to our procession – apparently in appreciation of the cars, as witnessed by the number of ‘thumbs-up’ received- and allowed us to stay together as a group. Climbing higher, we enjoyed the traffic-free meandering two lane roads through the small towns of Somerset, Mount Aukum, and River Pines.

Leaving the higher foothills, we descended into the Shenandoah Valley Wine Region of Amador County. It was in this area, in the early 1850’s, that the University of California established its very first Agricultural Research Station to study and develop wine grapes in its own vineyards.

Next we stopped at Sobon Estates, the oldest continuously operating winery in the State of California. Founded in 1856 by the Swiss immigrant Uhlinger family, the winery has been in operation since then, surviving the Prohibition years by making sacramental wines, and selling grapes to home wine makers. Before entering the tasting room, we enjoyed a light snack in the pleasant shaded picnic area. After sampling a number of wine varieties, we toured the adjacent museum containing various homemaking, coopering, winemaking, and agricultural artifacts used by the early Amador County settlers. In the old wine cellar the original four 6’x8’ wine casks remain. As we started our engines and lined up to proceed on our way, the tasting room staff and customers came out in the courtyard to wave and grab a quick photo of the sight.

We then drove a few miles along Shenandoah Valley Road to the beautifully designed Mediterranean style Villa Toscano Winery, planning to take advantage of the stunning location for our commemorative photo-op. Unfortunately, Villa Toscano is a must-see location in the many chauffeured Wine Country Tours, and the place was packed. Consequently, we ended up being a photo-op for the tourists, so we took a couple of quick snap shots and went on our way to lunch in the town of Plymouth.

During the booming mining years of the late 1800’s many gold country towns were referred to by names other than their official ones. Plymouth was referred to as ‘Pokerville’, apparently due to the availability of that pastime. Placerville, to the north, was known as ‘Hangtown’ due to its swift and final justice. Drytown, to the south, was so named because of the lack of a saloon… and the creek went dry. We decided to eat at the Plymouth Hotel, which was established in the late 1800’s. The hotel has a restaurant and saloon on the ground floor, with lodging on the upper floors. Here we enjoyed a delicious – and very filling - late afternoon lunch and pleasant conversation before going our separate ways, as some of the group still had over 100 miles to drive home.

We all had a very enjoyable day; pleasant weather, good roads (by California standards), great scenery, and the company of others sharing our love of Panteras. As an added bonus, all the cars performed flawlessly!

Emilia & I put on a number of miles before we even got to the Tech session. We started out very early with a trip to Fairfield to bring seven big boxes of old office records to be shredded at the Napa Solano Dental Society Annual Shred-a-thon. They only do this once a year, so we were not going to miss the opportunity to shred old records. We were up so early we decided to go to breakfast at a restaurant that we had been trying to go to for some time. In the past, we had always been there later in the morning and could not get in the place without a very long wait. But because we were so early this time, we actually got seated at Bab's Diner, in Suisun. This is a good place for breakfast. Emilia enjoyed great biscuits and gravy. Jim had eggs and linguica, which were also great. After breakfast, the Shred-a-thon and running a couple more errands we were on our way to Wilton and the Tech session. We arrived at Sue and Garry's about 11 AM. We were the first people to arrive, even before Lori and Mike, with the Pantera to be worked on at the tech session. After a tour of the Choate's garage and house, the four of us enjoyed a lunch of great build your own sandwiches and salad.

Eventually the tech session car and more members of the tech crew arrived and the projects were begun.

The main project was to install Kirk Evans flat firewall kit on Lori's car. While that was going on, a brake pad replacement was attempted, only to discover that the new Porterfield pads did not have the correct backing plate. They fit, but did not have the tangs that the retraction spring rests on. The old pads were down to the backing material, so the new ones were installed just to have some braking ability, even though they would rattle a bit. They will be replaced later, with the correctly shaped pads.

While the guys wrenched the ladies relaxed, chatted and even took a trip to visit some miniature horses in the neighborhood. Eventually there were over 20 people at the house for dinner after the tech session. A dinner of lasagna, salad and garlic bread was enjoyed. There were two birthdays celebrated by the group. Sue had a birthday cake and ice cream to help celebrate the occasions.

We drove back to Rio Vista that night, but at least three of Sue's extra bedrooms were used that night. We heard later that the tech session continued on Sunday with some people not heading home until Monday. I guess that shows what lengths Pantera people will go to in helping out another Pantera owner!

Ryde Hotel Brunch

The weather had been cold and wet earlier in the week but on Sunday the front had passed through and the weather was cool, clear, and dry. Our house was the meeting place for those brunch attendees traveling from the west and south. We had coffee, tea and a bathroom for those people who had made the morning drive to Rio Vista. We greeted Nancy Haney, Lori Albino, and Steve & Merry Dalcino. The two Mikes were not in attendance. Mike H. was ill and Mike D. was in Detroit. Everyone was on time and had time to stretch their legs and relax before we caravanned to the Ryde Hotel. John Worsley had made all the arrangements for our group to be at the Ryde. Thank you John!

The fifteen-minute drive from Rio Vista on Highway 160 was a good ride. The first local tanker truck pulled off in about one mile and the only other truck in front of us waved us past him when we caught up to him as we were about to cross the Isleton Bridge. The rest of the drive on 160 was zero traffic. The Sacramento River that snakes next to the road was like glass. There were even a few trees along the way that showed some fall color. We arrived at the Ryde Hotel to find John waiting in front in the designated Capitol Pantera parking area. We filled the area with three Panteras and the Bricklin. Already at the Ryde with John, were Garry and Sue Choate, and Lamar Fairchild and friend Maureen.

We enjoyed our meal. There was plenty of conversation about many topics. Almost everyone is planning on attending the Capitol Pantera Christmas party on December 3 at the Choate's home in Wilton.

So once again it was a good day due to the fact that we drive a Pantera.

Summary of the November 2011 Capitol Panteras Meeting

The November meeting had no Club cars in the parking lot. Members attending the meeting, Jim & Emilia, Don, Ken, John W., Garry & Sue.

There was no raffle or "Driving for Gas $" drawing.

Sue reported that the Capitol Panteras Christmas party will be at their home on Saturday, December 3. Sue will be preparing the main course, a potato side dish, rolls & butter and nonalcoholic beverages. She would like some help with munchies and dessert. We had a sigh up for the additional food items you would like to bring. Remember the cost of the party is $10 per person. Attire for the party is Holiday Casual. It is a BYOB, to insure you get what you want to drink. This year the gift exchange theme is Argentina in honor of Alejandro deTomaso's birthplace. If you want to take home a gift you must bring a gift. The gift should have ~ $20 value. If you cannot think of a Argentinean themed gift, you can think car, since we are a car club. Please RSVP to Jim at [email protected] by Wednesday, November 30. So far we have 22 people attending the party, but not everyone has signed up for a food item. Those people need to also contact Jim with their food item so that the menu can be finalized. The Choate's requested that their address not be sent out in the normal newsletter, so the party address will be e-mailed to all people who RSVP'd.

There will be no regular monthly Capitol Pantera meeting at Mimi's in December. We hope to see more people at the January meeting when we will be working on the 2012 CP calendar of events. Please plan to attend with ideas to put on our Club schedule of events.

Handling is a major objective for our cars and yet the setup and engineering have been a mystery for me.  I love the crisp handling of the European offerings and hate the lazy one of my 1957 Chevy.  The following is offered in the hopes of simplifying what you can do as a means of changing the response of your car.

 

But first, understand that “understeer” is when you have more steering into the turn than the front wheels are actually going.  The angle of the wheel is sharper (more) than the direction of the car.  Simply, the tires are slipping through the turn.  This action is sometimes called “push” by those NASCAR drivers.  American engineers build in this feature to ensure that the public is not surprised by and overly responsive car.

 

Active drivers like more positive feedback along with faster translation of steering inputs.  Increasing oversteer brings the car around quicker.  It is marked by less steering angle than the car’s direction.  The rear here has a tendency to ”come around”.  You need really quick hands to recover from too much car rotation.   Rally drivers induce this by applying the rear brakes in turns.  You can also do this in your Pantera by lifting the throttle suddenly in the middle of a turn causing an immediate exit of the track.

Caster tilted forward of front wheel king pins or spindle is negative.  Rearward is positive caster thus the top leans backwards. Straight axles on early Fords were 4.5 to 9 degrees positive while Chevy used 2.5 to 3.5 degrees, and Mopars used 1 to 3 degrees positive (layback).  Positive caster yields heavy steering and improves straight line stability.  If the caster is different from side to side, the vehicle will pull to the side with the less positive caster. If the caster is equal but too negative, the steering will be light, the vehicle will wander and be difficult to keep in a straight line. If the caster is equal but too positive, the steering will be heavy and the steering wheel may kick when you hit a bump.   

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


 

Camber is the tilt on the wheel from vertical.  Positive is when the top of the tire leans out.  This is often done in very early cars with ultra skinny tires.  Such cars call for positive settings ranging from .25 to 1.5 degrees.  Two degrees positive like on my MGTD wears the outside edge of the tire and make the car twitchy.  Negative leans in at the top.  Radials have the most force with a trace of negative of .5 to 1 degree.  Slightly more (1 to 2 negative degrees) for a very aggressive cornering style is often used.  This makes the tire patch flat when the body rolls in the turn adding to grip.  Some drift cars use even more negative camber.  They seem to have absolutely no concern over tire wear.

 

Toe-in measures the difference between the front and rear of the tire’s sidewalls.  This setting exerts a leverage that keeps the front wheels straight down the road and helps the wheel to return to center.  Many cars set it at zero.  Radials are usually set at 1/16 to 1/8 inch as norm.  Wear on the tire tells all.  If sharp edges (saw-tooth) are felt while running a finger across the tread from outside to in, more toe-in is needed. If edges are felt going inside to out, some toe-out is needed.

 

Rear Sway Bars can be adjusted by reading the corner weights.  Loading one side sets preload heavier on that side via a longer linkage.  Shorter linkage lightens that side and allows better corner weight loads.  Shoot for weights within 20 pounds side to side.  I’ve placed a large bar on my 57 Chevy to control body roll, found that it worked very well but did increased the understeer.  Now I’ll fashion a rear bar to bring it back.  One thing at a time!

 

All of this applies to the rear (IRS) on our Panteras.  Corvettes need the same attention on the late model cars too.  Thus, you can have the rear help bring the car around using the above table.  It’s normal for us to focus on the fronts but start to think in terms of controlling both.

 

If your car has them (DeTomasos do not), the Pitman arm must be adjusted at the exact center of the steering box and the drag link must also be at exactly 90 angle to the arm.  Variations will cause the steering response to be different right versus left.
